Abstract :
Summary form only given, as follows. This paper presents gas breakdown data for a monocone geometry for gas pressures ranging to 100 atmospheres and stress times ranging from 1 to several nanoseconds. Empirical formulas relating the gas breakdown field to pressure and stress time are given for Hydrogen, Air, Nitrogen, and SF6 taken with a gap spacing on the order of 1 mm. The polarity effect on edge breakdown is given. The monocone geometry enabled the arc risetimes to be measured to some extent limited primarily by cable risetime.
