Abstract :
Internet real-time and reliable transmission is demanded in many applications. Existing transport protocols is hard to meet above requirements. For example, RTP is used in real-time applications, but it is not reliable. In high loss and delay networks, TCP is hard to provide real-time transmission. On the contrary, UDP is not reliable protocol. In this paper, the property of real-time is analysed which focused on TCP and UDP. Transmission delay and average transmission delay are employed to express the real-time. It is clear that low average transmission delay indicates better real-time. In our simulation, we focus on TCP about its real-time in high loss and delay networks. In addition, goodput is also important for users. High goodput and real-time transport protocol is desired for a number of applications.
