  • Abstract
This paper examines generalized multiprotocol label switching (GMPLS) control plane security by contrasting the GMPLS control plane security mechanisms to the ATM control plane security mechanisms. The security mechanisms available in the GMPLS control plane are presented; thereafter the ATM control plane security mechanisms are examined and contrasted with the GMPLS control plane mechanisms. This demonstrates how the single security solution of the ATM control plane provides a simple, consistent and comprehensive set of security services as compared to the GMPLS control plane security mechanisms which are implemented on a protocol by protocol basis. We conclude by noting that implementation of GMPLS control plane security mechanisms is administratively complex and suggest the adoption of a single security solution for the GMPLS control plane and requirements for such a solution.
