Abstract :
In order to investigate how high bandwidth communication systems will deal with multimedia documents, a detailed study of the representation of these documents must first be accomplished. The author presents an overview of the various techniques used to represent multimedia information. This includes the representation of the logical and physical structures of the different types of information objects composing multimedia documents. Issues concerning the relationship between these objects in the time domain (such as synchronization) are emphasized. The techniques used for coding and storing the contents of these objects are also discussed. Current standardization efforts in the area of multimedia document interchange are also discussed
