            Abstract :
Four important factors in achieving reliability in any system are identified; design, redundancy, screening and feedback. Application of these factors is illustrated by a few examples taken from submarine cable systems. Such systems consist of a chain of elements; cable carrying fibres and electrical power, associated joints, repeaters to boost or regenerate the signal periodically, and land terminals. A user is concerned with overall reliability, and examples are taken from the whole system
