Abstract
The next generation personal communications network (PCN) will likely consist of an ATM-based B-ISDN backbone interconnecting wireless mobile networks employing microcells. Support of unlimited terminal mobility and fast or seamless handoffs over microcells accessing the B-ISDN at different points is an expected requirement that is not currently met. To meet these requirements, we propose extensions to the B-ISDN user transport and signaling network architecture and signaling protocols, which optimize handoff delay while minimizing resource allocation, handoff failures, and call processing load in the intelligent network (IN), and are backward compatible to current B-ISDN standards and implementations
