Abstract :
Radio channels in mobile and wireless communication systems are affected adversely by fading and interference. This has the consequence of a reduced channel availability and, hence, a degraded quality of service. From the system point of view, this leads to an increase in traffic that the system has to cope with. The present paper addresses this problem by introducing the term “virtual traffic” into the queueing model for the radio channels. By this means the quality of a nondeterministic channel, such as those of mobile and wireless communications, is taken into account. The result leads to a generalization of the Erlang-B formula for channels with nondeterministic quality and, as such, can be used for network design in mobile and wireless communications
