Abstract
An upper bound for the probability of cell loss of bursty sources in broadband integrated packet networks based on asynchronous transfer mode is discussed. A performance model is developed to obtain this upper bound for traffic sources admitted into the system in connection-oriented services. It is possible to evaluate the required bandwidth for a desired cell loss rate, and provide procedures for call admission and proactive congestion control at the access nodes of the network using this upper bound. A simulation model and results for a number of cases are given and the tightness of this bound is verified, especially for moderate cell loss rates
