Abstract :
Personal mobility is generally acknowledged as one of the key functions to be provided in future telecommunication networks. The processing load impact on the fixed infrastructure entities is expected to be heavy and have influence on manufactures and operators, due to its impact on respectively network architecture and dimensioning requirements. The paper applies a mobility model to the processing load evaluation in personal telecommunications networks. Alternative configurations in cell size, location area dimensioning and network topology are considered, thus allowing to study different environments. Basic mobility control elements are identified and the relevant processing load is evaluated. As a result, critical points arising in different environments are identified and the allocation of mobility control functions is discussed
