Helicopter Operations Search & Rescue, HEMS • Main use today for helicopters: search and rescue operations • In civil aviation: HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Services) • Typical mission course: • Arrive in unprepared terrain • Find a proper landing spot located close to the mission target, free of obstacles like powerlines, poles, etc. • Usually, this task is carried out by the pilot himself using a-priori knowledge of the terrain (maps, aerial photographies, etc.) • Today, these data exists in digital form. They can/could be evaluated semi-automatically
