Abstract
• We successfully replicated the SOAR1 study — We developed a new departure procedure in a shared airspace — We emulated a scheduling concept to optimize opportunities for departures to climb through gaps in arrival flows — We demonstrated that the more accurate the departure times, the higher the probability that aircraft could climb earlier • In addition, we tested 2 types of decision support tools: 1 static (tie-boxes) and 1 dynamic (conflict probe) — The conflict probe, a trajectory based tool, enabled better decisions — The tie-boxes helped controllers as well — However controllers anticipated diverging separation — Controllers lost separation in 7/144 occasions • We found that controllers needed better decision support tools with — Options to correct for departure time errors — Better estimates that take into account the diverging separation rule
