In this paper, the authors discuss the effects of intelligent transportation systems on both the local environment for humans in transportation, and the global environmental effects: city sprawl; pollution; and the distribution of comfort. The paper addresses four subtopics: how much transportation is needed; the smart cockpit; sharing the driving experience; and distributed decision making
