Abstract
This paper provides an insight of process safety enhancement in oil and gas industry in the context of fire and gas detection system. A risk-based methodology to determine detection coverage targets paired with a specialized three-dimensional software tool to systematically quantify the detection coverage have been developed by PETRONAS. This methodology is widely accepted and deployed in both upstream and downstream facilities across the Group. With the aid of this standardized Engineering solution, consistency in fire and gas detector placement is assured without being under-engineered or over-engineered. In other words, fire and gas detection mapping leads to a fit for purpose design balancing both safety and economic.
