Abstract :
This paper presents an approach to locate the operation-band of a quasi TEM waveguide loaded PBG with the uniform electric field distribution along the waveguide cross section by using left-handed material performance of the PBG waveguide. We first measure the S-parameter of the PBG waveguide, and then extract the refraction index, effective permittivity and effective permeability from these S-parameter though the extraction method for the constitutive parameters. It can be observed that these values are all negative in two frequency intervals, and the lower frequency interval is just corresponding to the operation-band of the PBG waveguide with the uniform electric field distribution along the waveguide cross section. This approach avoids the direct measurement of the E-field along the cross section of the PBG waveguide as well as the corresponding complicate E-field measurement circuit.
