Abstract :
British Telecom´s telephony on passive optical network (TPON) system already supports fiber to the curb (FTTC) through Street TPON. TPON also provides a reference for the analysis of the next generation of FTTC systems. Increasing the copper fan-out increases the number of telephony customers through readjustments in optical fan-out and data rate. The efficiency of the entire system can be increased through concentration and voice compression. In addition, signal modulation and coding can increase the effective sensitivity of optical receivers, giving a further increase in the total fan-out. The analysis of the trade-offs shows that several thousand customers can be supported on an FTTC system using present optical technology
