Abstract :
The macrobead, a biohybrid artificial pancreas (BAP), is used to treat type 1 diabetes. A hypothetical human transplantation would require 125 rat equivalent macrobeads. A mode of delivery that allows the placement of several hundred macrobeads into a basket or pouch type device is required. Four commercially available materials were identified as possible candidates for creating a pouch: polyvinyl chloride acrylic copolymer (PVC), polyether sulfone (PES), polyvinylidene difluoride (PVD), and polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE-teflon). Pouches of each material underwent in vivo biocompatibility and in vitro permeability examinations. Based on the results PES and PVD appear suitable for creating a pouch to hold a large number of marobeads
