Abstract
Different from the terrestrial cellular systems, the GEO mobile satellite system exhibits its own characteristics, such as the extremely large beams (cells), the long propagation delay, the stringent resources restriction and the diversity of the MES (mobile Earth station) velocity. Therefore, a location management algorithm with low complexity, called as MPA (mobility pattern adaptive) algorithm is proposed. In this algorithm, a restraining updating strategy was applied to the low velocity MES while the high velocity MES will establish a location area visiting list and adjust its updating strategy adaptively based on its mobility pattern which is learned from the visiting list. The algorithm proposed can remarkably reduce the average signaling load on location management. Furthermore, this algorithm has a favorable adaptability to the MES with various CMR (call mobility ratio) value.
