            Abstract : 
As a fundamental work on coding theory, the characteristic polynomial for symmetric companion matrix of an extended field with the characteristic number 2 is investigated. A new linear recurrence relation is obtained. The relation provides us with an algorithm to calculate the determinant corresponding to a symmetric companion matrix of a primitive element of an extended field.
