  • Abstract
Road users in the United Kingdom have been exposed to tolling for as long as tolling has been in existence around the world. However tolling in the UK has been primarily limited to tolled crossings or to a small number of specific charging schemes. In other parts of Europe, North America and Australasia, with a shift towards tolling motorways (or highways) significant progress has been made in the use of toll regimes/applications and designs/implementations. One such development that has brought significant benefit to nations or regions is Toll Interoperability. This paper briefly looks at the concept of Toll Interoperability and explores it as an essential element for the United Kingdom to move towards the next era of tolling.
