Abstract
A formulation of the two-dimensional volume conductor forward and inverse problems is developed. The medium is modeled as a one-dimensional evanescent wave-supporting structure, so that it can be described by an equivalent filter. This signal processing interpretation is used to study the effects of layered intervening media and solve inverse source problems. A test waveform simulating the extracellular potential resulting from an action potential propagating in a Purkinje fiber lying on a flat plane was used to test the algorithm
