Abstract :
Ozone is an extremely powerful oxidising agent and is used in a number of industrial applications as a bactericide, steriliser and bleaching compound. A major disadvantage in using ozone stems from the generation process which is very inefficient and this makes ozone expensive. This is particularly true when compared with other less environmentally friendly compounds such as chlorine, which is produced in massive quantities for a number of applications, particularly in the production of plastic. There is therefore a strong motivation to investigate ways of improving the efficiency of ozone generation which includes looking at alternative production methods. This investigation compares the performance, in terms of ozone generation, of a wire/cylinder electrode arrangement when supplied with either DC or pulsed corona. It is clearly established that the pulsed approach is far more efficient in producing ozone than a DC corona
