Abstract :
Summary form only given. Unique optical phenomena can arise in multilevel systems due to interference between the linear and/or nonlinear polarizability properties of quasi-degenerate states. Although resonant nonlinear polarizabilities are generally dominated by their imaginary part, we demonstrate here how the first hyperpolarizability of a 3-level molecule at resonance can become real valued as a result of destructive interference between two much stronger imaginary parts.
