  • Abstract
Distributed generation (DG) connected to distribution networks introduces significant challenges in terms of power quality and reliability of supply because many types of these new technologies are interfaced to the network through power electronic converters. A multi-agent control strategy based on a hierarchical control structure with various levels is proposed in this paper to enhance the power quality of the network. Furthermore, a highly DG network is split into small zones identified as Local Controllable Zones (LCZs) based on specific characteristics, operation and control requirements of each zone. The concept and methodology of the proposed control system are explained, including the simulation studies that demonstrate the operation between control agents. The case study is based on a radial distribution network and the simulation results examine the power quality performance especially in terms of voltage profile and harmonic content.
