Abstract :
This paper proposes resource allocation method for transmitting video streams intended to multiple users over time-varying wireless channel. Medium grain scalable video coding is employed to compress the video streams. The video coding method provides packets which can be dropped for bit rate adaptation at the cost of decoded video quality. This paper also employs adaptive modulation. It can provide channel adaptability. If the wireless channel environment degrades, it can select bandwidth inefficient modulation to guarantee solid transmission at the cost of affordable bit rate reduction. Since medium grain scalable video coding is considered, the situation can be handled by reducing the transmitted packets in order to serve real time streaming service. This paper issues two control factors which are video packet dropping and modulation scheme, and proposes a method to find out optimal combination of the two factors, where received video packets without error contribute to video quality. The proposed method solves Lagrange optimization problem to obtain optimal packet dropping and continuous modulation scheme.
