Abstract :
In order to clarify the mechanisms of partial discharge (PD) and tree degradation, PD characteristics of an artificially-simulated tree channel in a low-density polyethylene (LDPE) were investigated. PD characteristics of an artificial channel remarkably changed after the inception of very small trees from its tip. This indicates the change in PD mechanism by the tree inception. The PD characteristics of an artificial channel with diameter of 30 μm were similar to those of a tree. On the other hand, an artificial channel with diameter of 100 μm showed PD characteristics similar to a void. PD characteristics strongly depended on channel diameter. From these results, the mechanisms of PD in a tree channel and tree propagation were discussed.
