Abstract
A quality-of-service (QoS) reservation protocol is proposed in this paper to deal with the transport of variable bit rate (VBR) type asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) traffic across the air interface. Channel access is performed in a two-phase manner. First, a connection or call needs to be accepted at the call level. Then channel access is arranged at the burst-level. The call admission and channel time allocation are both handled bearing in mind the concern of the QoS. The protocol postulated in this paper is designed to meet both the cell loss ratio and real-time constraint. This protocol has an additional advantage of considerably larger call admissible region. The necessity of traffic enforcement together with implementation is further discussed.
