            Abstract :
This work presents a comparative study between the traditional method based on PI controller and an advanced smooth Sliding Mode Control (SMC) applied to a voltage source inverter based STATCOM. Both of the systems are used to regulate the reactive power by controlling the grid voltage at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC). A smooth saturation function is used to minimize the chattering generated by sign function.
