Abstract :
A mechanism for oxidation-reduction reactions occurring across bilayer membranes is identified from kinetic studies on viologens bound to vesicles and from stoichiometric analyses of viologen redistribution accompanying the reaction. The viologens, as the only lipophilic ions in the system, diffuse in response to membrane electrical potential, and consequently track the movement of the electron
