Abstract :
An analysis is made of the probabilities of data packet loss for both an encrypted channel in self-synchronous cipher feedback mode and a nonencrypted channel in the Ku-band single-access return link of the Space Station Freedom (SSF). Simulation results show reasonable agreement with analytical results. When channel bit error probability is 10-5 and the total number of packets in a frame is three, the analytical result is 0.39% packet loss, while the simulation result is 0.22% packet loss due to encryption. Although the analysis is performed for the SSF application, the equations derived, with minor changes, will be useful in many packet communication applications
