  • Abstract
A simple experiment that permits photoelectric signals originating from interfacial proton exchange to be identified is reported. Although this component of the photosignal can be selectively eliminated by denaturation by prolonged drying in air, another component that is attributed to intramolecular charge displacement remains apparently intact. A light-controlled surface potential associated with an interfacial proton transfer process is suggested as a possible switching mechanism in visual phototransduction
