Abstract
Stable phospholipid bilayer membranes were made by polymerizing the phospholipid 1,2-di(2,4-octadecadienoyl)-3-phosphatidylcholine (DODPC) by means of UV irradiation and used to measure proton translocation and ATP (adenosine triphosphate) synthesis by H+-ATPase from the thermophilic bacterium PS3. The polymerized membrane was much more tight and stable than the monomeric DODPC membrane, but not more stable than the soybean phospholipid bilayer membrane previously used for reconstruction of H+-ATPase
