Abstract :
Various kinds of multi-gigabit-per-second long span transmission systems including repeaterless systems and repeatered systems are evaluated from the viewpoint of initial system cost and transmission distance. A combination of a transmitter with high output power and a coherent detection receiver with high sensitivity is suitable for a repeaterless system. For a repeatered system, an optical amplifier is indispensable to construct a nonregenerative repeater, and coherent modulation/detection is preferable to intensity modulation/direct detection due to its potential for long span transmission. The feasibility of the technologies required in long span transmission systems are demonstrated by a field trial of a prototype coherent repeaterless system at 2.488 Gb/s
