Abstract :
The future of broadband services provided by telephone companies in the United States is discussed. The discussion emphasizes a transition approach that will move gradually from existing technologies toward a broadband architecture. It provides insight as to the path of the evolution given the new regulatory environment in the United States. It is the transition approach that will assure that the telephone networks are designed to meet residence and business customer needs in a timely and cost effective manner, which will minimize the risks of deploying the wrong technology
