Abstract :
An ergometric system for measuring the energy expenditure due to muscular activity of small mammals is described. The method is based on measuring the vibrations induced in a platform on which the animal is living. The capability to detect and quantify low energy levels transmitted by shivering is used to conclude that hypothyroid rats must rely mostly on shivering thermogenesis to resist moderate cold exposure
