Abstract
A novel cavity-backed folded microstrip antenna for applications of UHF band is introduced in this paper. For one thing, to reduce the horizontal size of the antenna, the radiating patch is folded downwards forming a pyramidal configuration. For another thing, the ground plane is folded upwards to form a conducting wall, which helps improving the beamwidth. Effects of the folded wall on the characteristic of the antenna such as resonance frequency, impedance bandwidth and half-power beamwidth have been discussed experimentally. Finally, the designed antenna is fabricated, which achieves light weight, small dimension and wide beamwidth. Thus, this antenna can be useful for satellite communications in future.
