Abstract :
The following paper presents distinctive case studies detailing upgrades and revamps of rectifier systems. The profiles include a review of high-performance rectifier components, controls, human-machine-interface equipment and other systems now in use. Quantified and tangible results of these include: increased production, improved equipment performance, higher efficiency, ease of operation, meeting state-of-the-art control & protection requirements of plant integration, reduced down time due to maintenance procedures and increased reliability. To ensure availability of a reliable, efficient and safe operating DC source, equipment upgrade and revamp must be a first priority. Such upgrades and revamps address these key power-conversion equipment challenges head-on: ongoing performance of critical electrical components; lack of available spare parts and/or replacements for power and control modules; and ever-higher demand for DC current, to optimize equipment operation. Conventional maintenance systems/programs, however thorough, are not inherently adequate to substitute the benefits of equipment upgrades and revamps. It should also be noted that efficient plant life exceeds the optimal equipment life cycle and viability; this further demonstrates the requirement of upgrade and revamp efforts.
