Abstract
For many critical processes, the use of standby generators is common and, in some installations, may be the only means of power. The intent of this paper is to address additional considerations when applying non-linear loads such as adjustable speed drives on generator supplied distribution networks due to generator limitations and inherent characteristics. Integration and regulation issues are also discussed. The paper focuses on diesel powered synchronous generator applications per the authors´ experience. Items such as power factor correction capacitors, harmonic filters as well as capacitance involved in drive designs such as the current source inverter (CSI) PWM drive with PWM (active) rectifier are discussed in general terms.
