Abstract :
In an earlier publication, M.M. Shashani (1987) proposed a static volt-ampere reactive (VAR) compensator (SVC) using gate turn-off thyristors (GTOs) instead of conventional silicon controlled rectifiers (SCRs) as the major switching device. The theoretical results indicated that the switching scheme developed eliminated any desired number of harmonics completely. In this work, a single phase of a three-phase GTO SVC rated at 25 MVA and 13.8 kV is arbitrarily selected to be connected in shunt with a parallel R-L load and then computer simulated to test the theoretical results obtained earlier. The same SVC using conventional SCRs is also simulated, and the results of the two simulations are compared. The simulation is done for different values of SVC fundamental current and for different values of line inductance taken as a percentage of load inductance.<>
