Silica waveguide to photodiode interface for hybrid integration

Abstract :
We have demonstrated a relaxed tolerance, self-aligned waveguide to photodiode interface for use in silicon opto-hybrid receiver modules. The interfaces showed high coupling efficiency (0.9dB loss) between a singlemode waveguide and a 50 μm radius photodiode with 1.5 GHz, 3 dB bandwidth. Further work is being carried out to evaluate the increase in coupling efficiency to higher bandwidth photodiodes that can be obtained with the improved waveguide end face fabrication process
