Abstract
Open access to distributed information stores is a problem in integrated engineering environments. Data access protocols provide a common interface for the access to information stores. Several file transfer and database access protocols are standardized in the context of the ISO open system interconnection reference model. The Document Filing and Retrieval Protocol Standard (DFR) is compared with alternative solutions such as FTAM (File Transfer Access and Management) or RDA (Remote Database Access). Evaluation criteria are introduced, and the suitability of the protocols for the use within integrated engineering environments is discussed
