Abstract :
The authors review network topology issues, the relative merits of asynchronous and synchronous operation, and some line-coding aspects. New experimental results for propagation delay variation in the UK-Belgium No.5 submarine system and high-speed regenerator burst-mode operation are presented. The conclusion drawn is that submarine networking is technically feasible, although measurement and specification of network jitter characteristics merit further study.<>
