  • Abstract
The authors investigate the use of GaAs-AlGaAs heterostructure bipolar transistors (HBTs) in the realization of MSI application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) chips and establish the maximum operating frequency and yield achievable using a single-pass custom IC design route. The circuit chosen to evaluate the application of HBT to custom circuit design was a universal four-bit counter. It was intended to assess the counter for its use in high-speed computer applications and in frequency synthesizers. The fastest four-bit counter reported uses GaAs DMESFET IC and operates up to 1.5 GHz. The circuit described has been clocked at 2.6 GHz and is the fastest synchronous counter yet reported.<>
