Abstract
A novel AC/DC drive for starting vehicles driven by internal-combustion engines, and for supplying energy to the ever-increasing electrical loads is described. The system consists of a three-phase squirrel-cage induction machine which operates in both motoring and generating modes, and a power conditioner capable of inverting, rectifying, and providing excitation to the machine, depending on whether it is working as a motor or as a generator. Presented are the special features of the drive systems and its control strategy, with emphasis on the power conditioner
