Abstract :
A mobile terminal generates electromagnetic fields whose polarisation states depend on the operating frequency, the direction of radiation and the effects of the user. We have simulated and measured the polarisation states of a simple prototype mobile terminal. At frequencies around 1 GHz the polarisation of the terminal is close to that of a dipole antenna. At frequencies around 2 GHz the radiation pattern and polarisation state is rather complex and varies according to the observation angle. A phantom head changes the polarisation, and the effect is larger in the lower frequency. New ways of visualising the polarisation state are presented.
