Abstract
In a personal communication system (PCS), one important thing for user location management is to reduce the cost associated with location updating and searching. We introduce a new location management scheme based on the GSM and IS-41 standards. The scheme separately and dynamically distributes a location area to each mobile terminal. So each mobile terminal has a different location area that is a hexagonal area centered on the cell where the terminal last updates its location. The paper also introduces a scheme that dynamically distributes the size of the location area according to the terminal´s call-to-mobility ratio (CMR). A paging scheme according to the distributed paging area (PA) is also introduced. Finally, we introduce a discrete analytical model for the schemes, which describes the updating cost and paging cost, and study the system performance under various parameters. Analytical results are provided to demonstrate that the schemes are simple and feasible, and the system robustness is also improved.
