Abstract :
A novel slim FBG (fiber Bragg grating) sensor wire and its application in real-time dynamic shape detection of colonoscopes are presented. The SDIM/WDM (spatial division multiplex and wavelength division multiplex) sensing network is composed of 20 FBG sensors in four channels. The sensors are mounted on the body of a slim flexible wire, which can be inserted into the biopsy channel of a colonoscope. The FBG sensors are used to capture deformation of the sensor wire. A signal processing system and novel software are designed to reconstruct the shape of the colonoscope. Configuration of experimental system, experimental results and the temperature influence are also discussed.
