Abstract :
In a practical smart antenna different sources of noise exist, such as thermal noise, oscillator phase noise and spurious responses. Furthermore a long-term drift of amplitude and phase response is observed. Each of these effects can be well characterized for a single channel, but the performance of a smart antenna mainly depends on the correlation between the channels. The influence of correlated noise and drift on system performance is discussed and experimental data from a 5-6 GHz smart-antenna testbed is given. The testbed employs an active antenna array and a software-defined radio architecture.
