Abstract :
ATM networks that support variable bit rate (VBR) MPEG video services necessitate cell loss priority schemes in order to protect essential image content of transmitted data during periods of network congestion. This paper presents a novel method of providing two-layer video, without compromising coding efficiency, as well as providing protection to I/P frames even when multiplexed sources are strongly synchronised. Moreover, the method is shown to reduce required bandwidths to be allocated to MPEG sources. A single node ATM multiplexer is simulated using real broadcast quality MPEG-2 sequences in order to demonstrate the method´s effectiveness in comparison to that of a standard single layer
