Abstract
As Universal Personal Telecommunications (UPT) is seen as a very important value added service in the future, it is crucial that third generation systems will support UPT. The Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is a third generation system currently being developed in Europe and it is intended to be the pan-European third generation system to begin deployment at the start of the next century. The main focus of this paper is the analysis of UPT for UMTS in the context of the different architectures, and resulting control issues, required for the support of UPT in UMTS. The goal is to identify requirements on both UPT and UMTS for the support of UPT in UMTS
