Abstract
In ad hoc networks some nodes can became a critical spot in the network because they support packet forwarding for most of their neighbours. Critical nodes would consume more energy due to the extra load and deplete battery sooner. These unfairly burdened nodes will lead to node failure, network partitioning, decrease in route lifetime and route reliability. To avoid this problem, this paper proposes a new routing protocol, called Energy Efficient DSR (E2DSR) for balancing the energy consumption amongst the nodes in the network. E2DSR uses some mechanisms of Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) but defines a new structure for control packets, changes the routing behavior in nodes, implements a new "Energy Table" and creates a whole new algorithm for route cache and selection.
